KAMPALA — Police in Katwe Division are holding five suspects in connection with a series of aggravated robberies allegedly committed across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation that also led to the recovery of two pangas and the impounding of two motor vehicles believed to have been used in carrying out the robberies.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire identified the suspects as Emmanuel Kiggundu, 30; Rashid Sserwadda, 28; Ibrahim Kato, 35; Moses Ssemwanga, 26; and Abdul Kiyemba, 32. (Use names if officially released by police.)

Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the suspects are being investigated over a string of violent robberies reported in different parts of the metropolitan area.
“Police at Katwe are holding five suspects linked to a series of aggravated robberies committed across the Kampala Metropolitan Area. During the operation, officers recovered two pangas and impounded two motor vehicles believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes,” Kawala said.
According to police, investigators are examining whether the suspects are connected to other unsolved robbery cases reported in recent months.
The recovered exhibits have been retained as evidence while forensic experts examine the impounded vehicles to establish their involvement in the alleged criminal activities.
Police said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal gangs responsible for violent robberies targeting motorists, pedestrians and businesses within Kampala and its surrounding areas.
The suspects remain in custody pending the completion of investigations and are expected to be arraigned in court on charges of aggravated robbery.
Police have urged members of the public with information that could aid the investigations or identify additional suspects to report to the nearest police station or use the force’s established communication channels.
Aggravated robbery is a capital offence under Ugandan law and is prosecuted where robbery is committed while armed with dangerous weapons or involves violence or the threat of violence against victims.
