KAMPALA — Stanbic Black Pirates successfully defended their National Rugby Premiership title after surviving a spirited second-half comeback from Buffaloes RFC to claim a dramatic 30-29 victory in Saturday’s final.
The defending champions looked in complete control for much of the contest after racing into an early lead, but were forced to dig deep in the closing stages as the Buffaloes came within a point of completing a remarkable turnaround.
Nathan Bwambale gave Pirates the perfect start, crossing over in the fourth minute to put his side ahead. Buffaloes responded through Yasin Waiswa, whose two penalties kept the challengers within striking distance.
Pirates soon reasserted their dominance. Alex Aturinda crossed for the second try before William Nkore added the conversion to stretch the lead to 12-6. Frank Kidega then touched down for Pirates’ third try as the defending champions tightened their grip on the match.
Buffaloes struggled to contain the Pirates’ relentless attack and were forced into two substitutions before halftime in a bid to halt the momentum.
Bwambale completed an outstanding first-half display with his second try of the afternoon, while another successful conversion sent Pirates into the break with a commanding 25-13 lead.
Buffaloes emerged from the interval with renewed energy, matching Pirates score for score as the game developed into an entertaining contest. Their late rally saw them slash the deficit to a single point, setting up a tense finish.
However, Pirates held their nerve in the closing moments to seal a 30-29 victory and lift the National Rugby Premiership trophy for the second consecutive season.
Speaking after the match, Stanbic Bank Uganda Chief Executive Mumba Kalifungwa congratulated the team on successfully defending the title, describing the triumph as a reflection of the club’s commitment to excellence.
“This kind of performance is directly aligned with our purpose, ‘Uganda is our home, we drive her growth.’ We remain committed to supporting the club and its continued success,” Kalifungwa said.
He said the title was particularly significant for the club after a demanding campaign.
“The club badly needed this title, and I am delighted that they delivered. Their determination and resilience have paid off, and we look forward to supporting them as they continue building on this success,” he said.
Captain Isaac Massanganzira dedicated the championship to fallen teammate Sydney Gongodyo, saying the squad had drawn inspiration from his memory throughout the season.
“This victory is for Sydney. We carried his spirit with us every step of the way, and we’re proud to honour him with this championship,” Massanganzira said.
Head coach Marvin Odongo said his side entered the final determined to retain the title and never allowed thoughts of defeat to creep into their preparations.
“I never think about losing. My mindset and approach are always focused on winning,” Odongo said.
He acknowledged that Pirates lost momentum after halftime but credited their dominant first-half display with laying the foundation for victory.
“We slipped a bit in the second half, but our ability to bank crucial points early in the game ultimately made the difference,” he said.
Odongo added that the celebrations would be short-lived as the team shifts its focus to upcoming competitions.
“We’ll definitely go back to the drawing board and prepare for the next tournament. There’s always room for improvement, and we want to keep getting better,” he said.
The triumph sees Stanbic Black Pirates reach another milestone in Ugandan rugby, having now featured in the National Rugby Premiership final for three consecutive seasons. Their latest title further cements their status as one of the country’s dominant clubs and extends a period of sustained success in the domestic game.
