Businessman charged with forgery in deceased Mayanja’s Wakiso land

A 60-year-old Kampala businessman has been formally charged in court over alleged forgery and fraud involving prime land in Wakiso District belonging to the estate of the late Mayanja.
The suspect was arraigned before the Magistrates Court on charges related to falsification of land documents and fraudulent dealings connected to the deceased’s property. Prosecution alleges that the businessman illegally processed and presented forged documents in an attempt to claim ownership or control of the land.
According to court records, the disputed property forms part of the estate left behind by Mayanja, who died several years ago. Investigators contend that the accused manipulated land transfer documents and signatures to facilitate a questionable transaction without the consent of the rightful beneficiaries.
State prosecutors told court that inquiries into the matter began after family members of the deceased raised complaints about irregularities in land records at the Wakiso District Land Office. A subsequent probe reportedly uncovered inconsistencies in documentation, prompting criminal investigations.
The accused denied the charges. Court remanded him pending further investigations and fixed a date for mention of the case.
Legal experts say disputes over estates, especially those involving high-value land in Wakiso and greater Kampala, have increasingly resulted in criminal proceedings due to alleged forgery, double titling, and unlawful transfers.
The case is expected to continue as investigators gather additional evidence, including forensic examination of the contested documents and testimony from land registry officials and members of the deceased’s family.
If convicted, the businessman could face significant penalties under Uganda’s Penal Code Act relating to forgery and obtaining property by false pretense.
