Govt closes five private schools over safety issues

Education authorities in Mukono District have closed five private schools in Nakisunga Sub-county after an inspection uncovered serious safety and compliance violations, including poor sanitation, overcrowded classrooms, and a shortage of qualified teachers.

The closures followed a routine compliance inspection conducted by the district education department to assess whether privately run schools were meeting the required standards for the safety and welfare of learners.

Officials said the exercise revealed unsanitary toilet facilities, classrooms congested beyond the recommended capacity and the absence of properly trained teachers in several of the affected schools.

Authorities warned that such conditions pose significant risks to pupils’ health, safety and the overall quality of education.

District education officers said the schools will remain closed until the proprietors address the identified shortcomings and meet the minimum standards set by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The closures have once again raised concerns about the rapid growth of privately operated schools in rural and peri-urban areas, where some institutions reportedly begin operations without adequate infrastructure, sanitation facilities or licensed teaching staff.

Officials urged parents and guardians to verify the registration status and learning conditions of schools before enrolling their children, emphasising that safeguarding learners remains a top priority.
